Pure masterpiece. So poetic, so ethereal. The photography is sublime at times (esp on the lake). Classic Japanese cinema (esp Ozu, Mizoguchi, Naruse and Kurosawa) is unmatched for me.

What we want most is usually right in front of us in the warmth of those who love us and share our lives. Five stars.

This is not simply a ghost story, but a cautionary tale about the consequences of selfishness and delusions of grandeur. That's what elevates it to the realm of great, classic storytelling.

That ending gets me teary every time. So eloquent.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I am shocked at the amount of people who love this film ( much like Tarantino films which I also do not like at a rule ). You have convinced me however to give it a second chance, perhaps I was having a really off day ...Read more

Sorry you didn't enjoy it. A lot of classic Japanese cinema is paced very slowly for Western tastes, and wading through subtitles doesn't make the time go any faster.

Hi Francine :
( you share your name with my pussycat, who is also named Francine, but we often call her Fran or Franny !! ). I am not sure if it was the pacing or the story itself that did not rock my world but I get a bit frustrated when this happens as I get 6 credits a month, so ...Read more

Has to be one of my favorite vintage Japanese fictions. It is truly masterful in the transitions of scenes, and the unique depiction of ghosts.

This is one of the finest ghost stories of all time, derived from the writings of Guy de Maupassant.

The book this is based on was written a hundred years before Guy de Maupassant was born.
